What makes her journey particularly interesting is that success didn’t happen all at once. Latto spent years performing, recording, and developing her sound before earning widespread recognition.

What Is Latto’s Real Name?
Behind the stage name Latto is Alyssa Michelle Stephens. Early in her career, she performed as Miss Mulatto, later shortening the name to Mulatto.
The original name referenced her mixed-race heritage. However, the word carries a complicated historical meaning and is widely considered outdated or offensive. As her career expanded, criticism surrounding the name became increasingly prominent.
In May 2021, she officially changed her professional name to Latto.
The decision wasn’t simply about creating a more marketable identity. It reflected a shift in how she wanted to represent herself publicly.
Changing an established stage name can be risky, especially when audiences already recognize it. Latto managed to maintain her connection with existing fans while introducing a name that better reflected the next stage of her career.

Although Latto was born in Columbus, Ohio, she considers Georgia home. Her family moved to the Atlanta area when she was approximately two years old, and she spent much of her childhood in Clayton County.
That upbringing played an important role in shaping her musical style.
Atlanta has been one of America’s most influential hip-hop cities for decades. Its artists have helped define Southern rap, trap music, and several major developments in popular culture.
Growing up near that environment exposed Latto to a distinctive musical tradition. The influence is easy to hear in her confident delivery, rhythmic production, and frequent references to Southern culture.
Her 2019 breakout single, Bitch from da Souf, made that connection especially clear. The song celebrated her regional identity while introducing her music to listeners across the country.
